What is a website name or Domain name?
A domain name is like an identification name which is there to indicate the ownership to that name on the web. Domain Name System, or DNS, is the most recognized system for assigning addresses to Internet web servers. Somewhat like international phone numbers, the domain name system helps to give every Internet server a memorable and easy-to-spell address. Every company or organization that wants to be on the internet will register a website name (domain name) for use as their on-line identity or name that clients will use to access on-line services such as the organization's website or email system. It is a unique address through which your customers and friends find all the information about your services or about you. Once a domain registration is done under your name it becomes your permanent address and users can have access to all the information no matter where you are located. Domain names are also known as hostnames or website name and each domain has a suffix attached to it. The most common are .com, .net, .org, .in and others. Domain names are often referred to simply as domains and domain name registrants are frequently referred to as domain owners, although domain name registration with a registrar does not confer any legal ownership of the domain name, only an exclusive right of use.

Why Do I need a website name (Domain name)?
You need a website name (domain name) as this is your unique identity on the internet. Organizations need to do a website name (domain name) search as per their business identity. In order to have a website name (domain name) identity you need to the check website name (domain name) online and buy the one which suits your business needs the best. With a website name (domain name) you would have your personalized email account, which would give you a more professional outlook. We at Wayinfotech.com offer cheap domain registration services as we are top leaders in website name or domain registration.

How Domain Names Are Spelled?
1) Domain names are organized right to left, with general descriptors to the right, and specific descriptors to the left. It is like family surnames to the right, specific person names to the left. These descriptors are called "domains".
2) The "top level domains" (TLD, or parent domain) is to the far right of a domain name. Mid level domains (children and grandchildren) are in the middle. The machine name, often "www", is to the far left.
3) Levels of domains are separated by periods ("dots").

A Domain Name is Not the Same as URL
To be technically correct, a domain name is commonly part of a larger Internet address called a "URL". A URL goes into much more detail than domain name, providing much more information, including the specific page address, folder name, machine name, and protocol language.

Importance of a Domain Name
There are a number of good reasons for having a domain name: If you ever change your web host, your domain name goes with you. Your regular visitors or customers who knew your site name as www.wayinfotech.com (for example) would not have to be informed about a change of web address (also known as "URL"). They would simply type your domain name and they'd be brought to your new site. If you are a business, a domain name gives you credibility. Few people will be willing to do business with a company that does not have its own domain name. If you get a domain name that describes your company's business or name, people can remember the name easily and can return to your site without having to consult their documents. In fact, if you get a good name that describes your product or service, you might even get people who were trying their luck by typing "www.yourproductname.com" in their browser. If you want good sponsors (advertisers) for your website, a domain name is usually helpful. It tends to give your website an aura of respectibility.

Use Keywords in the Domain name :
Keywords are a combination of words that people use to find something specific and help to open locked traffic. Like it or not, search engines decide where visitors go. Using keywords as part of your domain name or registering additional keyword rich domain names can ensure that you have can easily get much more traffic from search engines.

How to register a Domain Name
Getting a domain name involves registering the name you want with an organisation called ICANN through a domain name registrar. For example, if you choose a name like "example.com", you will have to go to a registrar, pay a registration fee that costs around Rs.650 for that name. That will give you the right to the name for a year, and you will have to renew it annually for (usually) the same amount per annum. My personal preference is to register the name directly with a domain name registrar rather than through my web host. I've heard stories, in the past, of less-than-reputable web hosts that registered the domain under their own name, making them the owner of the domain rather than you (although I don't know if such web hosts still exist today). Registering with a domain name registrar allows me to make sure that I am registered as the owner, the administrative and technical contacts. Being the owner is vital — if someone else places himself as the owner (such as your web host), he can always decide to charge you some exorbitant fee for the use of the name later, and there is little you can do. The various other contacts are less vital, but may still play important roles, depending on your registrar. For example, for some registrars, the administrative contact's approval is required before a domain name is transferred out of a web host (or at least, it used to be). If he/she cannot be contacted, the technical contact is used. Domain names disappear extremely fast. Many people claim that all the good domain names are gone. I doubt that — but it is probably true that most good domain names that are descriptive of products and services have been taken. If you want a domain name for your site, I suggest you act now, or face the anguish of having lost that name later. After all, Rs.1500 (more or less) for a year's ownership of the name is pretty cheap when you realise that you're cornering a good name for your website.

Step By Step Instructions - Domain Name
If you want to register a domain name, here's what you need to do. Please read it all before acting.
1. Think of a few good domain names that you'd like to use. It won't do to think of only one — it might already be taken (it probably is!). You can find some tips on choosing a good domain name from my article, Tips on Choosing a Domain Name, at http://www.wayinfotech.com/free-domain-name.html
2. You will need either a credit card or a PayPal account to pay for the domain. This is a requirement of most if not all registrars. It will allow you to claim and get the domain name immediately on application. This is not an option (unfortunately).
3. If you already have a web host, obtain from them the names of their primary and secondary nameservers. Don't worry if you don't understand what these things mean. Just save the information somewhere. The information can usually be obtained from their FAQs or other documentation on their site, usually under a category like "domain name" or "DNS" or "domain name transfer" and the like. If you can't find it, email them. You'll need the information to point your domain name to your website after you buy your domain. Don't worry if you don't have a web host yet.
4. If you do not have a web host, you can always allow the registrar to you to park your domain name at a temporary website specially set up for you. This way you can quickly secure your domain name before it's too late and still take your time to set up the other aspects of your site. As far as I can tell, most registrars (or probably all) automatically park your domain by default whether you ask them to or not, so if this is your situation, you probably don't have to do anything special to get it done.

Tips on Selecting a Domain Name
Here are some tips on selecting domain names. Choose .com domain names whenever possible. With a few exception, most people who use the web would assume that a site carries the .com extension. Choose domain names that are easy to type and easy to remember. They hold be short and make use of memorable words or sound. Word of mouth relay on the ease wih which domains can be called to mind. It is no use having a great site that no one can ever remember to tell their friends because they cannot remember the domain name. Choose domain names that reflect the type of content that you might find on the site. For example wayinfotech.com suggest something to do with email while autotrader sugest something to do with the buying and selling of cars. Avoid hyphens as there are very difficult to give verbally and not easy to remember or type. Finally avoid copyright infriengement. Do a check before you buy.

What is the Maximum Length for a Domain Name?
The maximum length is 63 characters. Some domain extensions have a minimum limit. For example the new minimum length for .com extension is 3 characters. You may be interested to know that the average length of registered domain name is 11 characters.

What are Top Level and Second Level Domain Names?
The .com in the wayinfotech.com example is known as a domain name extension. Originally, .com extensions were intended for commercial ventures while .net extensions were intended for use by Internet Service Providers. The .org extensions were intended for use by non-profit organizations or groups. This is no longer true and anybody can register a domain name with these extensions. Nowadays in addition to the above, you will find a host of new extensions like .biz, .name, .me etc as well as country level domains (like .us for the US, .in for India and so on.) Top level domains include any that contain only one suffix – for example .net, .info, .biz, .my etc. Second level domains are domain names containing another level after the .com or .net suffix. For example; .co.in is a second level domain style as it contains an additional suffix after the .com that shows the website originates in India.

How do I Get an Expired Domain Name?
A domain expires when the owner of the domain does not pay the renewal fee. When a domain registration expires, it becomes available for a new registration after the grace and redemption period of the domain. There is a common misconception that a domain expired on their expiration date can be booked immediately. That's not so. If a domain registration is not renewed by its expiration date, the domain simply goes into "expired" status, which means all services are shut off. Typically, a registrar provides a grace period for a limited time during which the current owner can still renew it. The best opportunity to get an expired domain name is to place a back order on it. You will receive notification when it is available to you. If more than one person request a backorder of the same domain, it goes up for auction and is awarded to the highest bidder.

What about Privacy?
Normally domain ownership information is publicly available to allow rapid resolution of technical problems and to permit enforcement of consumer protection, trademark, and other laws. However you can hide personal information from public view by subscribing to WHOIS privacy. WHOIS privacy is a service which hides your personal information from pubic view when you register a domain name. It is available for .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .name, .tel, .cc, .tv and .me domains. You can purchase WHOIS privacy during the registration process or at a later date. WHOIS privacy is available annually and the fee is not refundable. Once you have purchased WHOIS privacy, you can turn it on and off whenever you like.

What if Others Register my Company Name as a Domain Name?
All ICANN-accredited registrars follow a uniform dispute resolution policy. Under that policy, disputes over entitlement to a domain-name registration are ordinarily resolved by court litigation between the parties claiming rights to the registration. Once the court rules on who is entitled to the registration, the registrar will implement that ruling. In disputes arising from registrations allegedly made abusively (such as "cyber-squatting" and "cyber-piracy"), the uniform policy provides an expedited administrative procedure to allow the dispute to be resolved without the cost and delays often encountered in court litigation. In these cases, you can invoke the administrative procedure by filing a complaint with one of the dispute-resolution service providers.

Registration Period and Fee
When you do a domain registration, you own the right to use the domain name. And you continue to own the right as long as you renew the domain. The moment your stop renewing the domain, it expires and go through an expiration process. At the end of it the domain goes back into the common domain pool and anyone can then register the name and use it. Before we into the registration process, here are a few things that you should know about domains names. The minimum domain name registration period is one year and the maximum is ten years. Domain registration fee differs from one registrar to another. This difference is not a lot for a single domain but if you plan to register many domain names, the savings can add up. It pays to look around. Many registrars also provide web hosting services. And most web hosting companies are also domain resellers. As an incentive, many of them provide free registration (and renewal) for one or more domains if you sign up for hosting with them. If you want to get a domain for free, this is the way! Domain registration is a very competitive business. Many registrars offer the first year registration at a much discounted price. However fees revert to normal after that. Many registrars also offer a highly discounted fee for domain transfer for the first year. Likewise the fee reverts to normal after the first year. There are two types of top level domains - sponsored and unsponsored. Unsponsored domains are intended to be relatively large, generally available domains operating under policies established by the global Internet community directly through the ICANN process. Examples include .com, .net, .biz, .name etc. Sponsored domains are more specialized, with restrictions on the type of organization that can obtain them, and with policy-formulation responsibilities delegated to a sponsor representing the narrower community that is most affected by the TLD. Examples include .aero, .coop, .museum etc.

The Domain Name Itself
The domain name that you select should be easy to remember. Short is better than long and it should not be cryptic. For example "getupfresh.com" is better than "gtf.com" or "geufres.com". If you are a business, try to get a .com top level domain. When you tell someone your domain name, they are likely to assume that it is a .com. The chance that they get it right is higher with a .com. Also avoid hyphens if you can. They are harder to convey to potential visitors. Take note of brands and trademarks. If you do not own them, you should avoid including them in your domain. It is highly likely that you will lose it to the legitimate brand or trademark holder. The domain name should be reflective of your business. For example if you provide interior design services, the domain "theinteriordesigner.com" is appropriate. Or it says what it can do for your visitors. For example, "getupfresh.com" provides appliances to combat sleep apnea! From a search engine perspective, it helps to have the keyword in the domain name. Most if not all search engine consultants agree that having the keyword in the domain name helps with ranking. For example if you want to rank high for toasters, domain names with the word toaster in it such as "toasterscenter.com" or "toastershouse.com" will go a long way or higher up. After you have registered a domain, your registration information such as your name, email etc is publicly available by others doing a "who is" search on your domain. You can hide them information by opting for domain privacy during the registration process or later. and your information is hidden much like an unlisted phone number. If you register many domains over a period do time, you will end up with different expiring dates. Many registrars give you the option to synchronize your domain's expiry date so that they expire at the same time and you can renew them all at once.

Domain Registration Process
The domain registration process is quite straightforward. First brainstorm and come out with a few domain name options. Next visit a domain registrar site such as wayinfotech.com and try to register the name. You will know right away if the name is available or not. If it is not available, try another. Most registrars will also give you alternative names or top level domains to consider. For example if you wish to register "example.com" and it is not available, they may suggest "hisexample.com" of "theirexample.net". Assuming that the domain name is available, you will be taken to the next screen to create an account and to key in your name and contact information. Most registrars will also take the opportunity to up-sell hosting services, privacy option, multi- year registration, other top level domains etc. You can opt in or ignore as you please. You will also need to make payment. The most convenient method is by credit card or PAYPAL. So get your credit card or PAYPAL information handy. And finally do not forget to write down your account information such as login name, password and email address. You will need them for domain renewal.
